I spent a small fortune on this knife set shortly after I got married. The first set I purchased, I opened the box and one knife was broken in half and the handle was smashed so I exchanged it but should have learned my lesson. The cheap set of knives I bought in college at Wal-Mart are better quality than these. They are sharp and yes they look nice but they rust, big time! I hand wash and dry right away, they never sit in water and i've even tried sharpening them to get rid of the source of rust but it just keeps coming back. Im almost embarrassed to have these things sitting on my counter and i'm sure by next year, they'll be need to be replaced because they are flaking away. At one point I contacted Chicago Cutlery because there is a warranty and I never heard back from them, since then they have removed any way to contact the company, so much for the warranty! I will never buy Chicago Cutlery again.

I normally would not have bought a knive set on line. But I knew that the name was a good brand, and after searching some of the larger department stores, I decided to buy the set. When it arrived I was pleasantly surprised with the size of the butcher block that the knives set in - the set is beautifully designed.. I have not had to sharpen any of the knives yet!

Let me start off by bashing the morons who put these knives in the dishwasher. Only an idiot would do that, and then complain about them rusting. Do you put utensils with wood on them in the dishwasher then complain when the wood looks 'faded'? Do you put your non-stick pans in the dishwasher too? You also probably got upset when all the hand painted shot glasses you purchased in mexico started to loose all the paint after washing them in the dishwasher. Ok, the last one was a personal one from a relative of mine, but still, come on people.

Ok, now that I'm done with my rant I can continue to rate these knives. I would definately recommend these knives to anyone wanting a cost effective set of quality knives. The cheapest thing about them is the block. I have never had a problem with the plastic inserts coming out like previous posters have mentioned but I did have to 'fix' the hole made for the knife sharpener. At first it would only go in one way. If I tried to slide it in and it wouldnt fit I would have to turn it 180degrees and then it would fit. I fixed it by taking my smallest chizel and making the interior of the square hole a little bigger. I also don't like how close the knife sharpener sits to the knife beside it on the block. You can't just throw the sharpener in. You have to make sure the gaurd on the sharpener is vertical or else it will scratch the handle of the knife next to it. This is a minor complaint and nothing to base your final decision about these knives on.

Everything else about these knives are beyond my expectations. I sharpen them about every 5 or 6 uses, sometimes more sometimes less. I hand wash and either dry by hand or let them drip dry. I haven't had any rust spot problems and they are plenty sharp for my cooking needs. They cut tomatoes without pressing all the liquid out, they cut carrots like butter, they open those plastic cases that electronics come in that are impossible to open with ease (that is probably the only misuse my knives see). I have recieved many compliments on these knives about both their looks and their quality.
